E numbers

E numbers are standardized codes for food additives used on food labeling in the European Union and Switzerland. The numbering scheme follows the Codex Alimentarius the international foods standards organizaton of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.

Classification:

  • coloring 100 - 199 
  • preservatives 200 - 299
  • antioxidants 300 - 399
  • thickeners, stabilizers and emulsifiers 400 - 499
  • pH regulatorss and anti-caking agents 500 - 599
  • flavor enhancer 600 - 699
  • antibiotics 700 - 799
  • Other 900 - 999
  • Chemicals which do not fit in the above classification 1100 - 1599
