Malnutrition or malnourishment occurs when nutrient intake is less than requirements. 

  • Quantitative malnutrition is when energy requirements are not fulfilled
  • Qualitative malnutrition is due to an unbalanced diet resulting in a deficiency of certain nutrients 

The results of a deficiency in energy or of a specific nutrient include weight loss, susceptibility to infection, and organ dysfunction.
